Three journalists arrested in Somalia’s Southwest State

BAIDOA, Somalia - The Southwest regional security forces arrested three journalists from the Somali Journalists Syndicate - SJS in the town of Baidoa on Wednesday, the press watchdog said.

Mohamed Ibrahim Bulbul who is the Secretary of Human Rights of SJS, Hanad Ali Guled who is the Secretary of Training of SJS and journalist trainer Mohamed Bishar were detained in the airport.

A press release from the SJS said that officers from the Southwest state Security Commanders under President Abdulaziz Laftagaren are behind the detention of the Somali journalists.

SJS condemns this illegal act that took place at the Baidoa airport this morning, targeting the activists of the Somali Journalists Syndicate - SJS. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of the three illegal activists," said SJS.

It remains unclear why the journalists who have been in the city for the past few days were arrested upon their departure. SouthWest state officials were unavailable for comments when contacted by KON.

This comes as the SJS secretary Abdalla Mumin is in custody after he was detained at Mogadishu airport in October this year while traveling to Kenya for medical checkup.

Somalia faces a crackdown on press freedom as the country is ranked one of the most dangerous places for journalists due to the lawlessness and anarchy for three decades.
