UN reiterates support to Somali women’s participation in politics

Somali PM Mohamed Hussein Roble has named on Sunday a committee to ensure the 30% women's quota in the parliament.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The UN mission in Somalia has welcomed PM Roble's efforts to reserves a 30% quota of parliament seats for women in the upcoming election in the Horn of Africa country.

In a statement, UN envoy for Somalia James Swan termed the move a milestone and a step towards ensuring women's participation in the national assembly but says he hopes to implement the PM's promise.

"The United Nations in Somalia welcomes the appointment of the 13-member advocacy committee, that works to ensure women's quota of at least 30% of seats in the federal parliament for women." The statement from the UN said.

The statement also said that the United Nations fully supports the full representation of Somali women in the upcoming elections.

"Somalia Prime Minster his Excellency PM Mohamed Hussein Roble assured that the Federal Government of Somalia is committed to ensuring a 30% quota for women in both houses of Somali parliament for the upcoming elections," government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said on a Twitter post on Sunday.

The statement from the United Nations comes as the country missed the Senate election deadline on July 25, a move that raised fears of a new political crisis in the country.
