Villa Somalia’s relations with Puntland ‘deteriorating,’ source says

MOGADISHU, Somalia - It has been two and a half months since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected in Mogadishu on May 15 by members of the Federal parliament in an indirect vote.

Already political rift erupted among leaders in the previous opposition alliance led to a change in leadership in Somalia. Puntland and Jubaland differed on the appointment of PM Hamse Abdi Barre.

The President of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni, who lost to Hassan Sheikh in the May election in his bid to become the president of Somalia is unsatisfied with the new cabinet, per the sources.

Deni left Mogadishu for Garowe with nothing in his hands but lost millions of dollars in his campaign for the presidency. He also failed an attempt to be named prime minister. All these made him upset.

Keydmedia Online has learned that Deni is planning to cut off cooperation with Villa Somalia after PM Hamza did not consult with him on the selection of the Puntland ministers in the cabinet.

This deteriorated the relationship between Deni and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised to reconcile the nation. He campaigned for "Somalia at peace with itself and the world".

The election in May divided Puntland and Jubaland leaders Deni and Ahmed Madobe who fought together against the Farmajo administration. Madobe is now with Hassan Sheikh after a person from his clan [Ogaden] became the prime minister.

Hamza served as Jubaland electoral commission's chairman and helped Madobe hijack in August 2019. The PM was a member of parliament elected from Kismayo, Jubaland's current seat.

Puntland is expected to form an alliance with the Southwest which is not satisfied with the appointment of the cabinet after Hassan Sheikh released Lafta-Garen's No.1 enemy Mukhtar Robow from NISA detention and was appointed as minister of religion.
