We will not accept Somaliland secession bid, says Hassan Sheikh

WASHINGTON, USA - The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced that his government will not negotiate on the secession bid of the northern breakaway region of Somaliland.

Speaking to the Somali community in Washington on Saturday, Mohamud said his administration is determined not to accept Somaliland's ambitions to separate from the greater Somalia.

We do not accept any kind of isolation, no matter how it comes, whether it is economic or development, we say clearly that we will not allow it," said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Meanwhile, the president reiterated that the Federal Government of Somalia is fully ready for negotiations to end everything about the Somaliland grievance with mutual understanding.

Hassan Sheikh told the leaders of the self-declared republic to forget the idea of separatism, which he described as damaging the unity of Somalia. His remarks come amid stalled talks.

Somaliland unilaterally announced its secession from Somalia on May 18, 1991. The region sought international recognition for 31 years and still, no country in the world agreed to its ambition.

On the other hand, Muse Bihi Abdi, who is the President of Somaliland strongly condemned Hassan Sheikh's statement, describing it as worsening relations and increasing animosity.
