Al-Shabaab storms military base used by Ethiopian troops

HUDUR, Somalia – Al-Shabaab has launched a daring raid against a military base of Ethiopian soldiers serving with an AU force on Wednesday, with both sides claiming they inflicted a heavy toll on their foes.

Col Aden Abdi, a Somali army officer in Bakool, told KON by phone that the Ethiopian forces have fought off an audacious ambush assault on a heavily defended military base located near Hudur, the region’s capital.

Both sides have engaged in a deadly gunfight, according to the local residents who said they woke up to heavy shelling and artillery fire during the Al-Shabaab raid on Ethiopian troops.

A South West military official said the Ethiopian soldiers repulsed the Al-Shabaab attack and inflicted casualties on the militants who later fled from the scene after encountering stiff resistance.

The assault on Wednesday is the latest in a series of terror attacks by Al-Shabaab in southern Somalia and will fuel fears that the group, which is affiliated with al-Qaida, is gaining strength, taking advantage of the political crisis.

Last Saturday, the militants overrun two military bases in Awdhegle and Barire towns in the Lower Shabelle region, killing scores of soldiers. SNA chief Gen Odow Yusuf Rage said over 100 fighters were killed in the attack.
