Al-Shabaab attacks military base in central Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab has launched a pre-dawn attack on a Somali military base in the southern Mudug region, where a massive operation has been ongoing since last month.

The attack began with a car bomb explosion at the gates of the forward operating base that allowed heavily armed gunmen to storm the SNA camp and engaged in a fierce gunfight with the Somali troops.

The state media reported that the government forces have repulsed the attack and defended the FOB used to launch the military operations aimed to dislodge Al-Shabaab from the entire central province.

Local security officials reported heavy fighting between the two sides in the SNA outpost located in Amara village that was recaptured by the Somali army along with Galmudug regional troops last month.

Somali military claimed to have inflicted irretrievable losses upon Al-Shabaab and pledged to display the number of fighters killed and wounded during the battle in the Amara area.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab said in a statement that its combatants have “overrun” the military base and seized 14 battlewagons and weapons. SNA rejected the claims.

The militants entered the town after the ambush attack but have been pushed out by the country’s armed forces who were vigilant of such terrorist attacks since taking control of several villages from Al-Shabaab, including Ba'adweyne and Qay'ad with US air support.
