MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab terrorist group has claimed it killed at least 30 soldiers in central Somalia following an attack amid increased military operations.
The militants launched an assault targeting Galmudug state troops stationed in the newly liberated Qay’ad village located outside Ba’adweyne in southern Mudug province that led to a heavy gunfight.
The group released a statement claiming that its fighters overrun a base belonging to Galmudug regional forces who have been conducting operations along with the Somali army in the province in recent weeks.
The local officials have refuted the claims that 30 soldiers are dead, saying the attack was repulsed but one officer from the Galmudug army whose name was identified as Mohamed Ali Salad, and four other soldiers were killed in the battle.
The Somali state media reported that the soldiers lost their lives as the army inflicted a heavy loss upon Al-Shabaab and liberated several locations near Caad town from the group.
Somali military backed by Galmudug troops recaptured key areas, including Qay’ad, Amara, and Ba’adweyne from Al-Shabaab during a joint decisive offensive which comes amid election in the country.
