Al-Shabaab faces losses after army offensive on all fronts

BELEDWEYNE, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia said its army with the allied militia is on the edge of the first major victory of the war on Al-Shabaab on all fronts.

The military officials on the battlefields reported that the militants in Hiran and Galgadud regions in central Somalia are being surrounded and cut off from supplies and reinforcements.

Dozens of villages that link the major cities were captured and scores of Al-Shabaab fighters were reportedly killed in the ongoing military offensive, according to the officials.

If this effort is successful, it will represent the biggest defeat of the group since 2011-2012 and it will have to start worrying about the number of areas being captured.

This is the first major victory of the war that erupted in different regions since president Hassan Sheikh declared last month an all-out invasion against Al-Shabaab.

The leaders at Villa Somalia hold their breath waiting for the complete liberation of the entire areas and towns that remained under Al-Shabaab's hands for the past 15 years.

The government deployed units of the army in the central regions to reinforce the troops and locals in the battle and US continues to conduct dogged drone strikes.

Federal lawmakers and ministers went to the frontlines to boost the morale of the soldiers and the courageous residents who took arms to fight against Al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda ally and once most feared now faces its most difficult time in history after the villagers whom it ruled for 15 years with an iron fist and coercion broke the wall of dread.

The group which has an estimated 7,000-9,000 fighters has been waging an insurgency aimed at ousting the weak government and posed threat to the nighbouring countries.
