At least nine militants killed as SNA retakes town from Al-Shabaab

BAIDOA, Somalia - The Somali National Army [SNA] has carried out planned operations in the Goofgadud Shabellow area of the Bay region on Sunday, local officials said.

The troops engaged in a heavy gunfight with Al-Shabaab which is responsible for the bombings that killed thousands of people in the capital, Mogadishu in the past ten years.

Commander of the SNA’s 60th Division General Mohamed Sheikh confirmed that the Armed Forces ousted Al-Shabaab from the village near Baidoa city and killed nine fighters during the offensive.

The commander added that several Al-Shabaab bases have been destroyed as SNA took control of the area. He pledged they will continue the operation until Al-Shabaab is expelled from the Bay region.

Al-Shabaab is now facing a major military assault from different fronts in the south and central region with Somali and AU troops seizing strategic towns ahead of the presidential election in October 2021.
