MOGADISHU, Somalia - The African Union has congratulated the Somali Army on the liberation of Adan Yabal District in the Middle Shabelle Region from Al-Shabaab following days of operation.

The new Special Envoy of the African Union for Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, praised the government forces and their Macwisley militia for liberating the final Al-Shabaab pocket.

We praise our heroes of the Somali National Army and our friends who have shown in the ongoing military operations that they have the ability to deliver a heavy and irreparable defeat to Al-Shabaab in their trenches," Mohamed El-Amine Souef said.

The statement by the African Union came shortly after the Somali government officially announced that Al-Shabaab has been removed from Adan Yabal district, about 250 km north of Mogadishu.

ATMIS will continue to work with the Federal Government of Somalia and the people in the fight against terrorism and to bring security and stability to Somalia”, he emphasized.

The seizure of the town that was a training ground for the militants is yet another blow to Al-Shabaab as the group lost dozens of villages in Hiran, Galgadud, and Middle Shabelle regions to the combined forces backed by the US military.
