AU: The civilian Massacre in Hiran won’t go ‘unanswered’

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Al-Shabaab attack on travelers in the Hiran region will “not go unanswered”, said the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) a day after the civilian massacre.

The AU mission has vowed to cooperate with the country's security forces in peacekeeping operations, despite the increase in Al-Shabaab attacks in the Horn of Africa country.

ATMIS also condemned the Friday night attack by the group on a food convoy, which resulted in the death of 20 people and the burning down of seven trucks from Beledweyne to Mahas in the Hiran region of central Somalia.

ATMIS strongly condemns the brazen attack on innocent civilians and the destruction of trucks carrying urgently needed food and water supplies, committed by terror group, Al-Shabaab, on Friday in the Hiran region," ATMIS tweeted.

ATMIS offered its condolences to the families of those killed and remains committed to working with the Somali security forces to achieve peace and security in Somalia.

ATMIS commiserates with the families of those killed and remains committed to working with #Somali Security Forces #SSF toward peace and security in Somalia," the AU mission added.

This statement comes at a time when security officials in the Hiran region have confirmed that 20 people have died, while 7 trucks carrying food supplies from Beledweyne to Mahaas district in Hirshabelle state were burnt.

The security officials of the region also said that two emergency vehicles were targeted with Al-Shabaab explosives while they were trying to pick up the bodies of those who were killed in the attack.
