Bomb blast kills DC in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The commissioner of Qoryoley district in the Lower Shabelle region, Sayid Ali Ibrahim, was killed in a blast on Tuesday that sent a shock wave among residents.

The attack becomes the latest in a series of attacks in Somalia as local forces backed by residents and AU troops are battling against Al-Shabaab in multi-fronts in central regions.

Witnesses say one of the DC's bodyguards also died in the blast that took place early in the morning outside a restaurant near the bridge in the Qoryoley district.

The slain DC was doing a difficult job in a difficult place during a time that it was possible for a resident police force to control the town and protect its security from Al-Shabaab.

Qoryoley which is an agriculture-rich district in southern Somalia was taken from Al-Shabaab in 2014 by the Somali and AU troops. It lies 120 kilometers southwest of the capital, Mogadishu.
