Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the ambush attack, saying it killed three soldiers from the Ethiopian contingent of African Union troops in Somalia [AMISOM] on Wednesday.
WAJID, Somalia – At least one Ethiopian soldier has died and two others sustained wounds in a bomb explosion targeted their military convoy in southern Somalia on Wednesday.
Aden Isak, a senior Somali security official confirmed to the Keydmedia Somali service that a remote-controlled landmine struck the Ethiopian convoy in Wajid district in the Bakool region.
One soldier is dead and 2 injured in the IED hit the Ethiopian troops as they were fetching water from a well in the town. there were no civilian casualties,’ Isak said.

The AU mission is yet to comment on the attack, which comes as AMISOM is preparing to hand over the security responsibility to the Somali national army [SNA] after 15 years in service.

Ethiopia has a large number of non-AMISOM troops in Somalia who are accused of committing atrocities in the border regions, mainly in the Southwest state, were they battle Al-Shabaab.
In May 2020, Ethiopian forces have shot down a Kenyan plane carrying humanitarian supplies in Bardale town of Bay region, killing six crew members. No action was taken against them.
