Covid-19 deaths continue to surge in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Over the last 24 hours, the number of new Covid-19 cases has surged with 129 people testing positive, according to Somalia's ministry of health. 

The self-declared republic of Somaliland has recorded the highest rate of new cases of 73 people in a day with Jubbaland and Banadir taking 18 and 10 respectively.

The second wave of Covid-19 hit the country taking the lives of 440 people, among them religious and public figures since 2020.

The government has taken numerous measures to contain the disease, including making face-mask wearing obligatory in public and the closure of schools and universities extended for another two weeks.

The progress that the country has made in the fight against the virus includes the introduction of the Covid-19 vaccine where an un-estimated number of people has been accolated in the past few days.

According to Ministry, the total number of people who died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours is 12 with HirShabelle alone registering the highest death-toll after five succumbed to the disease. 

The overall number who tested positive stands at 10,214 where some 4,532 people recovered.
