JOWHAR, Somalia - The president of Hirshabelle state of Somalia, Ali Gudlawe Hussein, said that Al-Shabaab has been removed from key areas in the Middle Shabelle region by the army.

Guudlawe added that the army along with the pro-government clan militia did not encounter any resistance as they capture Hawadley and other villages around the central Hiran region.

The regional leader stated that the combined forces managed to detain 70 Al-Shabaab members during the latest military operation in the Middle Shabelle, bordering Mogadishu, the capital.

Guudlawe made the remarks in Raaga-Eele area while visiting the front-lines. He also said that they will soon reopen the roads blockaded by Al-Shabaab to allow aid to reach the drought-hit people.

Al-Shabaab lost dozens of areas in the central regions, mainly in Hiran since last month to the allied troops who are making gains in the ongoing offensive which gets support from the US military.

President Hassan Sheikh vowed to flush Al-Shabaab out of the entire country within one year to restore peace and order following three decades of conflict, piracy, and terrorism.
