Farmajo reveals number of troops trained in Eritrea as he left office

MOGADISHU, Somalia – After five years of chaotic leadership, Farmajo officially handed over the presidential power to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who became the 10th leader since independence in 1960.

In his final farewell speech, Farmajo has confirmed that 5,000 Somali troops missing in Eritrea are alive and waiting to be bought back to Somalia after delays last year due to the crisis within the government.

He said their soldiers’ registration file is now in the hands of the successor Hassan Sheikh who pledged to work around the clock to return the missing sons as their parents are crying for their homecoming.

The youths have been secretly recruited by Fahad Yasin while serving as NISA director between 2019 and 2020 and sent to Asmara without the knowledge of their families, according to the sources.

The school children have been lured with a job in Qatar during their recruitment in different regions in Somalia, mainly from Galmudug and the capital. This has caused confusion after their deaths emerged.

Last year, intelligence and UN reports have surfaced that revealed the presence of Somali forces in the Tigray region during the deadly battle between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF rebel group in the north.

Yasin, who served as Farmajo’s security advisor has had close ties with Eritrea’s dictator Afwerki who signed a tripartite security cooperation deal with Somali leader and Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed in 2018.

The new president pledged to work only for and in the interest of the Somali people and return the missing boys to take part in the liberation of the country. “We will progress and prosper together”.
