BAL’AD, Somalia - A powerful explosion has ripped through a convoy of Danab brigade forces on the outskirts of Bal'ad district in the Middle Shabelle region on Thursday.

According to security sources, the convoy came under a remote-controlled landmine blast hours after leaving Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, and heading to the Balad district during the wee hours.

At least fifteen US-trained DANAB soldiers were killed by the bomb that also completely destroyed their military vehicle, locally known as the Abdi Bile while driving in the Gololey locality.

The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab, which often exaggerates casualties from its battlefield operations, claimed the responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on its affiliated websites.

DANAB which means in English "Lightning” is a highly trained Somali Army infantry/commando unit that played a key role, alongside American forces in the counterterrorism operations in Somalia.

Today’s IED blast is part of Al-Shabaab's terrorist attacks on Somali and foreign forces and it comes as new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who was inaugurated today in Mogadishu promised peace.

Last month, dozens of Burundian soldiers serving under the African Union mission [ATMIS] were killed in the Al-Shabaab raid on their base in El-Baraf town in the Middle Shabelle region, the deadliest attack of this year.
