Foreign diplomats meet Farmajo amid pre-election tiff

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The representatives of Somalia’s International Partners held a closed-door meeting with incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo at the presidential palace on Saturday.

Sources privy to the talks revealed to KON that the foreign diplomats called on Farmajo to convene a forum in Mogadishu with regional leaders to find a solution to the deadlock over the upcoming election.

Saturday’s meeting at Villa Somalia came hours after the US urged the country’s political leaders to resolve outstanding issues to enable the peaceful #elections that the Somali people deserve.

In a tweet, the US embassy has warned the stakeholders against partial elections or parallel processes that could ignite conflict and jeopardize the hard-won gains in the security sector and counter-terrorism.

“Holding timely, credible elections are a vital element of the partnership between Somalia and the international community,” said International partners in a joint statement released on Friday, Jan 29.

They have urged all Somali leaders to make fair compromises necessary to ensure credible elections as time is running out for Farmajo whose term ending in 9 days. Somalia has missed two electoral deadlines.
