Galmudug state shuts schools to contain COVID-19 spread

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Education Ministry of Galmudug State of Somalia has ordered the closure of schools for the time being in an effort to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Starting from 10th March until 18th of this month, all schools in the region will be closed aimed at containing the disease, according to a statement released by the Ministry.

The ministry recognized the closure of schools will play a vital role in the fight against the virus. The second wave of Covid-19 hit the country severely and took the lives of many people and getting infected by others.

The Ministry has confirmed the first person died from Coronavirus in Galmudug with more than 20 people reported to have tested positive for the disease, including seven of its civil servants.

Earlier this week, the Mayor of Mogadishu Omar Filish this week imposed new restrictions, including wearing the Face mask in all public places in the capital, the most hit area in Somalia.

In addition, the country's Ministry of Information previously announced that the government has ordered the closure of schools and universities in the city for two weeks to contain the Covid-19 spread.
