Heavy fighting as bomb targets NISA convoy in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - An official says a convoy belonging to Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] was targeted in a roadside bombing in Galmudug state.

An explosive device planted on the side of the main road in the Sindhiqo area, about 30 kilometers away from Dhusamareb city has exploded as the convoy for NISA passed by.

At least one soldier lost his life in the IED explosion while dozens of Al-Shabaab militants were killed during a heavy battle with NISA officers on Tuesday, according to the official.

The attack, second within this month shows how the security in Galmudug state is fragile and the extremist group is making a comeback during a critical time of electioneering period.

Galmudug’s leadership was accused of incompetence and frequent pointless trips to Mogadishu while security in his region is deteriorating due to the rising Al-Shabaab attacks.

The armed forces face multiple fronts in the war on Al-Shabaab and despite AMISOM support, they failed to liberate entire areas still remained under the group’s control.

Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda allay in East Africa has been waging an insurgency for a decade to oust the UN-backed government which is protected by 20,000 AU soldiers.
