Mogadishu mayor makes face masks mandatory

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The mayor of Mogadishu, Omar Filish made wearing a face mask mandatory in public and called on the citizens in the Somali capital to abide by the order.

During a joint press conference with health minister Fowsiya Abikar on Monday, Filish threatened to punish everyone who fails to obey the rules aimed at containing the spread of the Covid-19.

Starting from the 15th of March, wearing a face mask will be an obligation, he said. The second wave of Covid-19 hit the country with more deaths recorded every day at De Martini hospital.

The local authority has previously imposed restrictions in an effort to curb the virus, including the closure of schools and universities for two weeks.

The mayor also highlighted that the severe impact the pandemic had on the people's lives will take them to decide whether they will suspend international flights temporarily.
