PM Visits Troops In central Somalia As War on Al-Shabaab Rages

BELEDWEYNE, Somalia - The Prime Minister of Somalia Hamse Abdi Barre with the President of Hirshabelle, Ali Gudlawe visited today the government troops stationed in the Hiran region.

The PM praised the troops for their heroic fighting to liberate the Al-Shabaab from the entire region with the help of a local militia known as Ma'wisley who dared to take arms against the group.

The prime minister told the national army forces to prepare for operations to eradicate terrorism in the areas and districts of the Hiran Region," said the office of the PM in a statement.

The PM was also accompanied by defense minister Abdulkadir Mohamud Nur and the army chief General Odowa Yusuf Rage on his troop visits on Thursday. They have been in the region before his arrival.

The Prime Minister arrived in Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiran region on Thursday to pay a visit to the military troops battling against Al-Shabaab and asses the humanitarian situation.

Al-Shabaab poses threat to the aid agencies which it banned from operating in areas under its control just 10 years ago, a move that elevated the plight of the people hit by the drought.

The country is now facing its worst drought in 40 years which affected more than 7 million people, who are mostly farmers and pastoralists who migrated to the big cities in search of food and water.

It's the first domestic trip by Hamse since he was appointed by President Hassan Sheikh in June 2022 as the prime minister of Somalia. He was MP elected from Jubaland before winning this high position.

This week, President Hassan Sheikh announced an all-out war on Al-Shabaab following a deadly attack on Hayat hotel in Mogadishu which left at least 21 people dead while 117 were wounded.
