Puntland minister dies of COVID-19, family says

GAROWE, Somalia - Puntland's Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport Asad Hussein Hashi has died in Garowe on Monday morning after contracting COVID-19, his family and state officials have confirmed.

Hashi died passed away in the hospital’s ICU three days after he tested positive for the novel coronavirus, becoming the latest high-ranking official to die of the deadly virus in the country amid rises in the cases.

On Monday, August 9, Somalia’s health ministry announced it recorded 64 positive cases in 24 hours, bringing the total COVID-19 cases in the country to 15,929, while 8 people died from the disease.

The country’s death toll stands at 858, while the number of recoveries has reached 7,783. Covid-19 has laid bare the fragility of Somalia's health system.

On Sunday, 108,000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have arrived in the country, the third batch in this year. The vaccine was donated to Somalia by France through the COVAX facility.

The Ministry of Health has been accused of failing in public awareness about the danger of the disease and the importance of the vaccine as less than 2% of the 15 million population have been vaccinated.
