Reer Nima’ale issues 48-hour ultimatum to Galmudug State president

GALKAYO, Somalia - According to reports from Galkayo in the capital of the Mudug region, after almost a week of a standoff, a temporary breakthrough agreement has been reached on the grievance of Reer Nim’ale, one of the largest sub-clans of Sa'ad from Habargidir [Hawiye].

The dispute over the naming of Af-Barwaqo as a full district has led the clan to announce a decision on 16th September 2022 to suspend all cooperation with current Galmudug state president Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoor-Qoor, who was accused of being an impediment to the process.

As KON previously reported, the problem created by Qoor-Qoor resulted in tension for a period of seven days after heavily armed forces in fighting vehicles staged a mutiny at all entry points of Galkayo which halted the movement of public transport.

After a long consultative meeting, the community agreed to re-open the roads, allow the vehicles to go for a week and has given Galmudug state president Qoor-Qoor a 48-hour ultimatum to clear out the accusations and sit down with the community at the negotiating table to discuss the rights of the community he overstepped.

The traditional elders of the community who held a press conference last night in Galkayo said that Qoorqoor had preliminary talks with them in which they decided to reduce the pressure on the regional to give him a chance to the dialogue aimed at finding a solution to contentious issues.

Following the soared relations, it was agreed that the parties should agree on something for the future that served the benefit of Galmudug, the people in the Mudug region, and mainly the dominant community of Reer Nim'ale, according to the elders who held the press conference last night in Galkayo.

The community said that it is necessary for the Somali government to intervene in the dispute with Qoor-qoor, before the situation gets out of control with the elders in Galkayo strongly insisted that if all issues are not fully resolved within 48 hours, it will take further steps and Galmudug state president will shoulder the consequences.

Reer Nim'ale accused Qoor-Qoor of denying their rights to the Galmudug as it was the founding clan of the regional state in central Somalia and belonged to the first president named Prof Mohamed Warsame Ali (Kiimiko). Also, Reer Nim'ale greatly welcomed Qoor-Qoor's election as president in the 2020 election. The clan did not receive a reward or thanks from Qoor-Qoor.

The elders said they are fighting for their rights to get approval from the Galmudug state parliament for the district-ship of Af-Barwaqo, which is located in the east of the Mudug region, which was ruined by the former military regime led by Mohamed Siad Barre who rejected just like Qoor-Qoor to promote the settlement to a district in 1988.

According to Keydmedia Online sources, Qoor-Qoor may travel to Galkayo in the next few hours to begin a dialogue with the affected community, after failed attempts to send his close friends, including Somali Senator Abdi Qaybdid as his representatives in the talks.
