Roble calls for investigation into Farmajo’s crimes in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has called for the prosecution of Farmajo over his crimes in the country during his chaotic presidency from 2017 to 2022.

Speaking at a ceremony in Villa Somalia, Roble handed over the office to the new Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Tuesday, he accused Farmajo had disrupting Somalia's democratic process.

Farmojo's decision was not to hold elections in the country, to stay in power, but his plot was prevented by units of the country's armed forces who rejected an attempted coup and another dictatorship.

I call for an investigation into those who have obstructed democracy and elections in Somalia," added the former immediate PM.

Major crimes took place in Somalia, including targeted assassinations, extradition of Qalbi Dhagah, the murder of Iran Tahlil, and raids against opposition and former leaders by Farmajo's regime.

At least 5,000 youths are still missing in Eritrea after the Farmajo administration has secretly sent them to Asmara between 2019 and 2020 for training. Fahad Yasin was in charge of their recruitment.

Somalia's elections have been delayed by more than a year after being blocked by Farmajo who created many challenges, including the Gedo dispute that Roble found difficult to solve easily.

In Somalia, no one is held accountable for his crimes due to a lack of lawlessness after the country endured turmoil for 30 years with the criminals being awarded positions in the government.

A culture of impunity is the root cause of Somalia's humanitarian and political crisis and unless the world urgently addresses it, war crimes and crimes against humanity will continue unabated, a civil society activist has told IRIN.

It's unclear if the new president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who was elected last May will restore the system of justice and accountability in Somalia to move the country forward and make it great again.
