Somali and AU police conduct joint operation ahead of election

JOWHAR, Somalia - Somali police along with AMISOM forces have carried out a joint security operation in Jowhar, the regional capital of Middle Shabelle, 90-kms north of Mogadishu.

The operation was mostly carried out on the main roads in Jowhar town, where the police were conducting searches of the public vehicles entering the southern town.

The local authorities said the aim of the sweep was to ensure the security of the city ahead of the parliamentary election which is due to kick off in the coming days.

Jowhar is preparing for the election of the Senate members from HirSabellle with reports that there is still a dispute among the local clans over the share of the seats.

Somalia is now in an electioneering period after delays in the vote for the parliament which has been marred by the deadlock over the process and formation of the electoral bodies.

Jubaland became the first state to start the Senate election last Thursday and picked four out of the eight seats allocated to the region, which was the epicenter of the row.
