MOGADISHU, Somalia - Three leading traditional elders in central Somalia joined Al-Shabaab amid a stepped-up army offensive on the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group.

Galmudug state security ministry has identified the elders as Sugaal Warsame Ali, Ali Yare Ahmed, and Omar Mohamed Jimale, who heed the group’s orders.

In a statement, the ministry added that the elders reached Al-Shabaab-controlled areas in Galmudug. It is unclear why the elders opted to make the surprise move.

The security forces were instructed to arrest them on the sight. The regional state warned the people against dealing with Al-Shabaab in all forms and take its orders.

Galmudug state security forces backed by the National Army [SNA] and local clan militia have been battling against Al-Shabaab in the Galgadud region for three years.

The allied forces captured dozens of villages in Hiran, Galgadud, and Middle Shabelle regions from Al-Shabaab since President Hassan Sheikh declared the all-out offensive in August.
