Somali Govt donates $1 million in support of Mogadishu attack victims

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The government of Somalia has donated US $1, 000,000 [One million] in support of victims impacted by the Zoobe explosions that took the lives of more than 100 people.

The twin car bombings outside the ministry of education in Mogadishu on Saturday, 29th October also left 300 hundred people, including mothers and children injured and traumatized in its wake.

The Prime Minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre announced the donation of one million US dollars to the relief fund created for the victims of the explosions who are currently treated at local hospitals.

The prime minister made the statement during an emergency meeting of the council of ministers to discuss the support of the victims, including many who are in critical and need urgent abroad treatment.

The cabinet said it is sponsoring the treatment and care of people injured in the KM5 Al-Shabaab blasts, and the free education of the orphaned children. It’s the first move by the cabinet since the attack occurred.

The death toll stands at 107, and nearly 300 are injured, according to the latest estimates by the emergency committee and hospitals. The attack was the second deadliest striking Mogadishu in the span of 5 years.

Two Somali journalists were among the fatalities. The blasts happened in a high-traffic area in Zoobe, the scene of the 14 October 2017 truck bombing that killed 587 people and wounded over 1,000 others.
