Somali military retakes control of new areas from Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali government said that the military forces have driven out Al-Shabaab from many parts of the Middle Shabelle region, which is the latest success in the joint operations in the central regions.

Al-Shabaab has been removed from 40 areas by the Somali army in cooperation with the local people. This is the biggest offensive to make territorial gains against the group since 2011-2012.

Somalia's Interior Minister Ahmed Moalin Fiqi said that the military succeeded in defeating Al-Shabaab in central Somalia, adding that Hiran and Galgudud regions will soon be free from the group.

The minister stated that at least 40 localities in the Hiran region and six others in Galgaduud were liberated in less than three weeks, describing it as a victory for the entire country's journey towards a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic state.

On Monday, the state media reported that the troops conducted an operation in Moqokori town in Hiran, which is the main Al-Shabaab stronghold in central Somalia and is on the brink of fall.
