Somali military says foils suicide attack against base

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia’s government said on Friday its troops foiled a suicide car bomb attack targeting an army outpost on the outskirts of Ba’adweyne, south of Mudug province.

The soldiers have spotted a plate-less car packed with explosives on the highway speeding towards their camp, hunted it down the shot dead the driver before the VBIED reaching a dead end near the base.

According to the reports, the car, rigged with a large number of IEDs, went off outside the military base early in the morning, leaving no casualties, but it was entirely destroyed and the bomber was dead.

An official statement from the Al-Shabaab said that at least seven soldiers were killed in the blast that targeted the allied forces from Galmudug and Somali national army [SNA] while 4 vehicles were burnt.

This is the second car bomb incident in the conflict-hit region in central Somalia since last month after an Al-Shabaab bomber carried out an attack on an army outpost in the Wisil area on June 27, killing soldiers.

Friday’s suicide bombing comes as allied forces are conducting military operations in areas south and east of Mudug and are trying to thwart an offensive by Al-Shabaab in recent weeks.

The Al-Qaeda-linked militants have been targeting African Union [AU] Mission in Somalia [AMISOM], government bases, and social gathering places, mainly hotels in Mogadishu.
