Somali Parliament endorses new cabinet

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The members of the Lower House Chamber of Parliament unanimously approved the new government and its program tabled by led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

As speaker Aden Madobe announced, 229 MPs voted in favor of the cabinet, 7 voted rejected, and one MP abstained. The PM has thanked the parliament for the endorsement of his government.

The 26-minister cabinet was appointed by Hamza Abdi Barre, 48, last week following more than a month of consultations with stakeholders. Most of the cabinet members and Federal lawmakers.

Hamza was named as PM on June 15 by the president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who won May 15 presidential vote in Mogadishu that marked the end of five-year political turbulance.

Barre who was also a member of parliament elected from Jubaland state is a close friend of Mohamud. Both belong to Peace and Development Party [UPD] founded in 2011.

The new government is facing the Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab, which still controls large areas of rural southern and central Somalia and an ongoing drought that affected more than 7 million people.
