Somali president fires Mogadishu mayor, reinstates Madale

MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh reinstated Yusuf Hussein Jimale as new Mogadishu mayor on Wednesday, replacing Omar Filish who has been in office since 2019.

It is the second time Yusuf Hussein Jimale [Madale] becoming mayor of the capital in 3 years, and his appointment comes at a time of changes in the country led by the new President.

Madale is an active member of the president's UPD political party. He was sacked by Farmajo in April 2017 after Feb 8 presidential election and replaced with Thabit Abdi Mohammed.

Filish came to the office after the murder of Eng Yarisow in 2019 by a suicide bombing at his office during Farmajo's regime, which many believed was a politically motivated assassination.

Mogadishu is currently facing poor sanitation, lack of security, and visible damage on some roads, with no sewers to carry water, which causes many areas to stagnate when it rains.
