Somali Senator levels serious accusations against IGAD

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Senator Abshir Bukhari has accused IGAD of wicked engagement in Somalia, a founding member of the East African bloc.

In a Facebook post, the deputy Senate speaker criticized IGAD's role in finding a lasting solution to the current political turmoil and described their legacy in the process of rebuilding Somalia as devastating.

“They took in the wrong directions relentlessly and undermined the efforts to ensure unanimous agreements to reach to get rid of this intimate situation,” he said – adding that instead of sympathizing with the eye-catching achievements the country made, they acted otherwise leaving the will of the 15 million citizens in uncertainty.

According to the Senator, the IGAD is on the way to recognizing the extension term that gives the incumbent a two-year mandate following a controversial bill regulated by the acting Parliament's Lower House on April 12.

Farmajo has recently met the AU Chairperson, who is the DRC President Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa, and asked him to support his extension in order to stay in office for two years.

Its unclear what is in store for the AU and whether they will support the demand of the outgoing leader as he is facing numerous pressures from the US as well as the EU who have disagreed with the extension and advocated for an immediate return to the poll talks to end the deadlock surrounding the country’s future.
