Somali troops advance closer toward major Al-Shabaab base

BAIDOA, Somalia – Somali national army [SNA] with the support of Southwest regional forces gained first ground from Al-Shabaab outside Baidoa city on Tuesday, edging closer to a major rebel-held town.

Southwest State’s information minister Ilyas Ali Nur said on Thursday that the combined troops will soon retake the Labataan Jirow area in the Bay region after they liberated a nearby village called Saydhalow.

It is an area where Al-Shabaab has the biggest base in the Bay region, our gallant soldiers are circling on the town and will take its control in the coming days from the terrorists,” he added.

The town is named after the famous notorious Labatan-Jirow prison where late dictator Mohamed Siad Barre used to imprison people accused of political crimes, and it is about 60 km away from Baidoa city.

The operation is led by MPs from the Federal Parliament and ministers from the Southwest state.

The minister of information, on the other hand, denied reports that Al-Shabaab killed dozens of soldiers during Tuesday’s clashes near Baidoa city, arguing that the militants suffered irretrievable casualties.

In the past three weeks, Al-Shabaab has lost dozens of villages in central Somalia, mainly the Hiran region to the Somali army and local residents who took arms the fight the group and defend their territory.
