MOGADISHU, Somalia - The government of Somalia has announced that its forces and a local militia have captured Wabho area in the Galgadud region without encountering resistance from Al-Shabaab.

The fall of Wabho, which has been in Al-Shabaab control for more than 15 years marks a significant gain in the ongoing major offensive against the militant group in central Somalia.

Speaking to the reporters in Mogadishu, the spokesman of the Ministry of Defense Gen. Abullahi Ali Anod said that the army conducted a mine search operation inside and outside the city last night.

Gen. Anod also said that the allied troops also took over the village of Warhoolo and other areas between the towns of Elbur and Guri'l and headed to other Al-Shabaab strongholds.

In the past two months, the national army and locals have succeeded in liberating key areas in central regions, and they are now preparing for the city of Elbur, one of the most important areas under the control of Al-Shabaab.
