Somali troops kill 130 militants in a new blow to Al-Shabaab: official

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A defence ministry official says at least 130 Al-Shabaab members were killed in a battle with Somali troops on Friday.

Speaking to the local media in Mogadishu, defence ministry spokesman Colonel Abdullahi Ali Anod confirmed that the militants faced a big blow in their attempt to attack El-Harari town in Hiran region.

Anod said the army soldiers ambushed a convoy of Al-Shabaab carrying fighters at Garas Magan area while en route to El-Harari, newly liberated village.

The troops acted quickly to avert the impending Al-Shabaab attack after receiving an intelligence information from Adan Yabal, a coastal town in Middle Shabelle region which is under the militants' control.

Al-Shabaab is trying to defend the strategic coastal city of Adan Yabal from falling into government hands, according to military sources.

Somali forces with the support of local clan militias pushed Al-Shabaab out of key areas in central regions in ongoing offensive launched in September to liberate the whole country from the militants linked to Al-Qaeda.
