Al-Shabaab is trying to defend the strategic coastal city of Adan Yabal in Middle Shabelle region from falling into government hands.
MOGADISHU, Somalia - A defence ministry official says at least 130 Al-Shabaab members were killed in a battle with Somali troops on Friday.
Speaking to the local media in Mogadishu, defence ministry spokesman Colonel Abdullahi Ali Anod confirmed that the militants faced a big blow in their attempt to attack El-Harari town in Hiran region.
Anod said the army soldiers ambushed a convoy of Al-Shabaab carrying fighters at Garas Magan area while en route to El-Harari, newly liberated village.
The troops acted quickly to avert the impending Al-Shabaab attack after receiving an intelligence information from Adan Yabal, a coastal town in Middle Shabelle region which is under the militants' control.

Somali forces with the support of local clan militias pushed Al-Shabaab out of key areas in central regions in ongoing offensive launched in September to liberate the whole country from the militants linked to Al-Qaeda.
