MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali government claimed that nearly 100 Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in southern Somalia during military operations involving foreign forces and the local militia.
In a statement, the ministry of information announced on Wednesday that more than 50 militants have been killed in the El-Gorof locality in the Galgadud region, where heavy fighting took place.
The dead bodies of at least 31 militants were recovered from the battle zone, added the statement posted on the State media sites. The area is now under the full control of the government.
A similar offensive took place in the vicinity of Basra located in Somalia's most militarized Lower Shabelle region which targeted a key Al-Shabaab hideout, according to the ministry of information.
The statement confirmed that 47 Al-Shabaab members lost their lives in the military operation while several escaped with wounds. There were no independent sources verifying the claims.
