MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali government forces and their allied clan militias have retaken new areas of the Middle Shabelle region from Al-Shabaab, in the latest gains against the group/

Colonel Mohamud Noor Masdile, a senior military commander who led the operation said that they destroyed all Al-Shabaab bases near Adale, which the Somali President visited this week.

Al-Shabaab militants, among them commanders in charge of the extortion were killed in the army offensive, according to Colonel Masdile. There were no independent sources confirming the claims.

We conducted a sucessful operation that saw liberation of fresh areas and the killing of dozens of militants, including senior commanders from Al-Shabaab," he added.

Since August, the Somali army along with armed residents have been battling Al-Shabaab in Galgadud, Hiran, and Middle Shabelle, where they liberated dozens of areas and killed over 600 militants.

The all-out offensive was declared by president Hassan Sheikh in August after Al-Shabaab attacked the Hayat hotel in Mogadishu, where the militants killed 21 civilians and hurt more than 100 others.
