Somalia calls on civilians to join army to fight Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a call for all eligible civilians to join the armed forces as fighting raged in multiple regions, including Hiran, Galgadud, and Bay.

The call which was made on Monday by Hussein Moalim, the national security advisor to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud came after the armed forces backed by local militia recaptured 40 villages.

Today, history is being written in Somalia, every citizen should register voluntarily for the defense of the country, you can play an important role in the ongoing liberation efforts", said the top advisor.

The government has mobilized residents in central Somalia to take arms and join the war against Al-Shabaab, a move that has recorded an unprecedented victory in the long-running efforts to regain control.

The minister of interior Ahmed Moalim Fiqi has announced that more than 40 locations were recaptured from Al-Shabaab in three weeks, describing it as a stronger message to the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group.

Although Villa Somalia promised a swift victory, the war took a stunning turn last Sunday when an Al-Shabaab bomber attacked a key military training base in the capital, Mogadishu, killing 15 recruits.

The government’s patience appeared to have run out, with its president Hassan Sheikh declaring an all-out offensive “to eliminate the terrorists” responsible for the deaths of thousands of Somali people.

The military offensive comes as half of the population [8 million] is facing a severe drought in Somalia which the UN warned could turn into famine by the end of this year if aid is not delivered urgently.
