Somalia, Djibouti leaders inaugurate language academy

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's president and his Djiboutian counterpart cut the ribbon for a new academy aiming to enhance the Somali language aiming to make headways in the two countries.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, together with his counterpart Isma'il Omar Guelleh, inaugurated the intergovernmental Academy of Somali Language, which was established in Mogadishu.

President Hassan Sheikh said the implementation of the Academy aims to preserve the culture and history for future generations, and further develop the Somali language.

The Somali language is the bond that holds the people of both Somalia and Djibouti together. It carries our shared culture, history, and heritage that passes from generation to generation," said Mohamud.

For his part, Guelleh described a landmark in the implementation of the academy as the Somali language is facing challenges in containing rival languages in the region, including English.

It is the backbone of the preservation of unity and the unity of our Somali people. Since is will improve the literacy of the Somali language," said Guelleh in his speech.

The two leaders who laid the foundation stone of the intergovernmental Academy of Somali Language in February 2015 and affirmed the importance to make the language competitive one.
