Somalia leaders conclude two-day consultative meeting

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The two-day national dialogue chaired by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud concluded at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu on Wednesday night amid a tight security measure.

The meeting was attended by the country's five regional leaders, Mogadishu mayor, and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. It's the 4th such forum since the election of Mohamud in May this year.

The leaders discussed security issues, strengthening operations to eliminate terrorist groups, assisting people affected by the country's drought, and delineation of powers at Federal and State levels.

They also talked about moving Somalia from the clan-based electoral system to the popular vote in 2026 which is one of the promises made by the current president during his election campaign.

Federalization of the judical system dominated the talks with the Puntland state rejecting to sign the agreement, citing the constitution of the country is yet incomplete.

The Council called on the Federal government to accelerate to response to the drought and called on the aid agencies to double their support for drought relief as 8 million are on the brink of famine.

The communique said the NCC is deeply saddened by the violent incident that took place in Baidoa on December 23, 2022, and called for genuine reconciliation to end the Southwest State crisis.
