Somalia PM visits Beledweyne as war on Al-Shabaab intensifies

BELEDWEYNE, Somalia - Somali PM, Hamza Abdi Barre arrived in Beledweyne, the regional capital of Hiran, where an intensified military operation against Al-Shabaab is underway.

The Prime minister welcomed the Vice President of HirShabelle State Yusuf Ahmed Hagar, the Governor of Hiran Ali Jeyte Osman, officials, and a large number of people at the airport.

Speaking to the media, Barre said the purpose of his visit is to strengthen the fight against Al-Shabaab and lauded the people of Hiran for their courage to be part of the country's liberation.

The Ministers of Interior, Defense, Women, Federal MPs, and other officials were already in Beledweyne to boost the morale of the government troops and local residents fighting Al-Shabaab.

It is the second visit of the PM to Beledweyne since he took office in June of this year. He is expected to pay a troop visit on the frontlines in Hiran, mainly the newly liberated areas.

A day before the PM arrived in Hiran, Al-Shabaab carried out two suicide bomb blasts in Jalalaqsi and Bulo-Burde towns, killing at least 21 people, in what seemed to be a response to the offensive.
