Somalia reports 14 deaths from Covid-19 in 24 hours

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia registered 123 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing its total infections tally nationwide to 7,850 since the outbreak last year, a statement by the health ministry said.

The ministry reported 14 new deaths, bringing overall fatalities from the virus nationwide to 274, and 34 patients were discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours to mark total recoveries at 3,901.

With the help of WHO, the country was expected to receive 1.2 million doses of the Oxford Astrazaneca vaccine last month but failed to import the life-saving medical support.

The government of Somalia has this week imposed new measures, including the closure of schools and universities and wearing face masks to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

The surge in Covid-19 cases comes amid a rising political crisis after the poll has been delayed last year with no solution in sight to end the uncertainty surrounding the country's future.
