BARAWE, Somalia – The leader of Southwest State said that an offensive by SNA and local residents will start in the Lower Shabelle region to liberate Al-Shabaab from the remaining areas.

Speaking in the former Al-Shabaab bastion, Barawe, Abdulaziz Lafta-Garen encouraged the people in the Lower Shabelle region to break the fear and join the ongoing military operations.

Lafta-Garen, whose term expired next month said Bay and Bakol saw a public uprising against Al-Shabaab and hoped the Lower Shabelle region’s residents to do the same.

I urge the people in Lower Shabelle region to take arms against Al-Shabaab and liberate their territory from the terrorists who are against the peace,” said Lafta-Garen.

The call comes as the Somali army along with pro-government militia driven out the militant group from dozens of key villages in Hiran, Galgadud, and the Middle Shabelle region in an ongoing war.

The government of Somalia said the combined forces killed nearly 1,000 Al-Shabaab fighters in the operation which is supported by the US military as drones hit key targets.

The Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked group has a strong presence in the Lower Shabelle region, which borders Mogadishu, where it orchestrates attacks in the Somali capital.
