Suicide bomber hits military training camp in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A suicide bomber on Tuesday morning attacked a military training camp in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, killing several soldiers, police and witnesses said.

The attacker reportedly disguised as a recruit detonated himself at the gates of General Dhega-Badan military camp, where soldiers are trained to fight Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group.

Heavy gunfire was heard from the scene following the huge explosion that rocked the seaside city during the morning rush hour. The exact number of the casualties still remains sketchy.

The blast sent a column of thick smoke into the sky and triggered panic among the residents in the Jazeera area, an area on the outskirts of the capital, witnesses said.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Al-Shabaab, which has pledged its alliance to Al-Qaeda in 2012 often carries out such attacks in Somalia, targeting army outposts and government buildings in Mogadishu.
