Suicide bombing kills 11 at military camp in Somalia’s capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A powerful suicide bombing occurred on Sunday morning at a training camp belonging to the Somali military in the south of Mogadishu.

An eyewitness confirmed to KON that a suicide bomber detonated himself at the entrance of General Dhega Badan's base while dozens of army recruits were lining up for the morning training.

After the explosion, heavy gunfire was heard in the base, and later the ambulances arrived at the scene and took the wounded and dead bodies to the hospitals.

Security sources confirmed that at least 11 recruits were killed in the explosion and many more were injured. The Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The base bombing seems was in response to the ongoing military offensive in central Somalia which dealt a major blow to Al-Shabaab after hundreds were killed and swathes of territory were captured.

Despite losing ground, the extremists continue to strike back and carry out deadly attacks in the capital, Mogadishu, and elsewhere in the country as SNA and their AU and US allies make gains.
