WASHINGTON - The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who flew from Kenya on Wednesday arrived in the US today, Thursday, where he will participate in the UN General Assembly [UNGA77] on September 20-26.

Before the UNGA meeting, the President will visit the Pentagon to hold talks with the US Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense.

They will discuss the cooperation between the two countries in counter-terrorism and the fight against Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda's East Africa branch which poses threat to US and Somalia.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III will welcome the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to the Pentagon for an enhanced honor cordon and bilateral meeting at 12:30 p.m. EDT, on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022," said the statement.


The United States returned its military presence in Somalia after Biden approved a Pentagon request to re-deploy American troops days after the election of Hassan Sheikh in May 2020.
