Two journalists among casualties in Somalia explosion

MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least three soldiers were killed and several others, among them two journalists wounded on Monday after an exposition ripped through their vehicles in central Somalia.

The blast from a remote-controlled landmine targeted a military escorting convoy carrying the governor of Hiran region Ali Jeyte at Qabno, a semi-forest road located between Mataban and Beledweyne.

A regional official told Keydmedia Online via phone that two journalists working for HirShabelle state TV named Khalid Ilka-Asse and Abdikarin Shabellow have sustained wounds in the bomb attack on their car.

Intense fighting was reported in the area between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab attackers following the IED explosion. The death toll is feared to rise due to the ongoing army operation.

The wounded TV reporters have been rushed to Beledweyne city, where they left in the morning for nearby Al-Shabaab-held key areas to cover the SNA military offensive aimed at dislodging the terrorists.

The governor escaped unharmed from the attack, said the official who declined to name as he was not authorized to speak on the incident which comes amid a severe drought in the south and central Somalia.

A security expert tells KON that Al-Shabaab retains control over large parts of the Horn of Africa country and has the ability to carry out high-profile attacks using suicide bombers, explosive devices, mortars, and small arms.

The Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group began the deadly insurgency in 2018 and it tries to oust the UN-backed Somali government in Mogadishu which is protected by AU troops.
