Two regional leaders meet with former presidents

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The leaders of Hirshabelle and Galmudug have on Thursday night held a closed meeting with the former Presidents of Somalia Hassan Sheikh and Sheikh Sharif, who are now leading an opposition alliance in Mogadishu.

Ali Guudlawe of HirShabelle and his Galmudug counterpart Ahmed Abdi Kariye alias (Qoor-Qoor) have been in the capital for several weeks to mediate between Farmajo and his opposition, mainly from Hawiye clans who formed a united front against the incumbent.

The meeting came after the Lower House of parliament voted unanimously to extend the term for Farmajo last week, a move that caused division and uncertainty in the country.

Sources told KON that the regional leaders and the ex-presidents wanted to release a joint press statement at the end of the talks, but Qoor-Qoor has suggested that they will return to Farmajo to recommend him to give up his extension term.

The two regional leaders who have been Villa Somalia allies in the past now pledged to reject and denounce the extension term in front of the Hawiye Clans Conference that is due to take place in the upcoming days.
