U.S.-trained Somali commandos exert pressure on Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Despite the absence of U.S. airstrikes, the elite Somali forces known as Danab [Lightening] stepped up their military operations against Al-Shabaab.

The commando unit which is based in Beled-dogle airbase in the Lower Shabelle region unleashed an offensive aimed to wipe out the group in different areas in southern Somalia.

A military official told Keydmedia Online that they killed at least seven extremists in the latest operation that also saw the destruction of their hideouts in four remote villages in the region.

Since the beginning of this new year, the Somali army recaptured key towns in the south and central region in an effort to avert the threat of the terrorist group to the ongoing election.

Somalia received military support from the AU military [AMISOM] which helped SNA liberate the capital in 2011 from Al-Shabaab and regain control of strategic areas since 2011.

The Al-Qaeda ally in East Africa, Al-Shabaab continued to wage deadly car attacks in the country and beyond, including Kenya and Uganda, whose troops are part of AMISOM.

AMISOM’s mandate is to expire on March 31 of this year after 15 years of operation that comes to the finish-line while Al-Shabaab poses threat to the security more than ever.
